Bivouac Campers supports the Kakapo Recovery Programme

At Bivouac Campers we love the outdoors. We love experiencing the beauty of New Zealand first hand, and as part of that, we want to give something back.

NZ's flightless native parrot, the Kakapo (where our flagship product gets its name) has been on the verge of extinction for the last few decades. In 1999, the known number of Kakapo was just 62 individuals - and is regarded to be extinct in its previous natural habitat.

The Department of Conservation's Kakapo Recovery programme has worked hard to help protect and manage the Kakapo breeding population, and as of 2018, that number has risen to 148.

That number is still incredibly low, and DOC are working to keep three island habitats completely predator free, so that the breeding populations can be kept safe. Two breeding populations are managed and the third is designed to be self-sustaining.
